Over the next two weeks, CSA members are getting a taste of my friends Sue & Elizabeth’s heirloom rhubarb. I haven’t planted any rhubarb myself (it’s a perennial that requires a couple of seasons to get going), but if I get a good response from folks, maybe I’ll add it to the list. The first [...]

First Planting of 2011

It was a long, rewarding day today at the farm as we transplanted the first round of spring crops (red cabbage, broccoli, golden beets, spinach, two kinds of head lettuce and kale) and also did our first direct seeding (spring mesclun salad greens, prize choy, purple scallions, radishes, cilantro and carrots)! Man, I hope carrots work out [...]

Groundbreaking

After weeks of rain/cold/snow/cold/rain/sleet/cold/hail/rain, the sun made a belated and much (!) anticipated appearance today in Southwestern Pennsylvania. And we took advantage. I can’t tell you how excited I was to break into this soil. I don’t know if you can tell from the pictures, but this is loose, dark, worm-filled, rich-smelling stuff. I can [...]

Napa Cabbage

For the farmer’s market last Thursday I was able to harvest several monstrous heads of Napa cabbage. These things were at least 5 pounds each. Big, tightly packed and beautiful. I admit to being a Napa cabbage newbie. But a few Google searches later, I’m armed with the following facts: Napa cabbage, also called Asian [...]

Recipe: Habanero Hot Sauce

I’m not one of those “spicy” people. I don’t order the wings that come with a T-shirt. I don’t douse everything from eggs to ice cream with Tabasco. And I don’t get a perverse pleasure from buying bottles of hot sauce with words like “insanity” and “death” on them. But when I look out on [...]

New Pics + Fall Preview

We’re happy to report that the tomatoes are making a resurgence and the fall crops are coming along nicely. We’re taking one more week off from CSA deliveries, but we’ll be returning next week with more tomatoes, lettuce (!), asian greens and even some sugar snap peas.

It’s been tomatoes for breakfast, lunch and dinner here at the Roos house, and if we work hard enough, I’m sure we can find a way to tomato-fy a dessert or two. We “sauced” our first batch of San Marzano plum tomatoes last night, simmering down an incredibly large pot of puree into four depressingly [...]
